This is a great self-guided introduction to equations. Students loved working on this in groups as they began to explore equation basics. Additionally, a culturally responsive real world connection is drawn to the ethics of police violence. Students are more likely to remember something when there is a relevant connection, especially when that connection sparks debate. I have given this activity to middle schoolers from 6th to 8th grade, and it is always fascinating to hear their reflections, as well as their retainment of what it means to make a true and false claim.
