The beginning book in the Test Decoder series introduces the format that empowers students to read, understand and correctly answer questions on important tests.
The questions in the Working with the Words section are the most important in the units. The questions force the students to use the definitions in a variety of ways. The questions in this section will be the hardest questions for the students to answer and will require the most guidance from you in the beginning.
-PART (A) The students must explain what the question is asking. The definition of the vocabulary word used in the question should be paraphrased in the students’ answers in order to get credit for the answers.
-PART (B) The students’ answers must explain and gather the information they need from the reading selection to receive credit for the answer. (Explain to the students that in a testing situation they may need to know information not given in a reading selection. Depending on the test directions, the students may be able to access resource material during the test.)
-PART (C) The students must answer the initial question correctly, being sure to follow the directions the vocabulary word has given in the question to receive credit for the answer.
A final step is the student's analyzing his own responses for completeness and accuracy. This is a vital skill in test-taking where no one but the student can affirm an answer.;
