Why choose our book above others? We are three teachers with nearly 30 years of experience each in the classroom. We saw students struggle with the “how” of testing. They may have known the content, but did not know what the question wanted them to do.
Our book focuses on mastering the test question vocabulary and practicing with the kinds of questions the students will encounter in most standardized tests, i.e. demonstrate, analyze, evaluate. They challenge the students to define these vocabulary words, explain what the words are asking them to do in test questions, gather information to answer the questions, and last, answer the questions. Through intense interaction with the words, the students will learn the meaning of the words and be able to apply that knowledge in testing situations. The book also contains review pages and reteaching materials.
Because of its interdisciplinary subject matter, the book can fit in across the curriculum. Constructing a Testing Vocabulary involves lessons that cover Math, Science, Social Studies and English/Language Arts. We might also suggest using the books to help ESL prepare for standardized tests.
*Note: Constructing a Testing Vocabulary (Gr. 8) and Building a Testing Vocabulary (Gr. 7-8) and Acquiring a Testing Vocabulary (Gr. 6) are part of the Test Decoder series. Both are now available on TpT. The series covers grades 3 to 8. The elementary grades 3,4,5 are also available here: Applying a Testing Vocabulary, Anchoring a Testing Vocabulary and Adding a Testing Vocabulary. Each of the books is flexible enough to use with students who read at a different level that their grade placement. The format of each unit is consistent throughout the series.
