This week long cross-curricular project is sure to engage your students and give them a deeper understanding of the redistricting process. Perfect for any Government or even Texas History class. The zip file includes a huge, 14 page, printable map of Texas (Microsoft Publisher file) U.S. Census data including: population, demographics, per capita income, and 2012 election results (Microsoft Excel File). A student report sheet (Microsoft Word File) and Teacher's instructions (Power Point File).
The theory behind this project is that students will draw the districts of Texas according to the constitutional provisions and compare their results with the actual redistricting of 2012, which is under review by the Supreme Court.
The week-long lesson will change the way your students think about redistricting and hopefully encourage them to be more engaged in state elections.
