With this lesson, students investigate the true cause of Texas Independence.

The classroom version includes a background reading regarding the Texas battle for Independence (with comprehension questions). The students are then provided with 5 primary sources that have been edited for clarity and comprehension. By having students discuss competing reasons why Texans declared independence, it makes the topic much more compelling! I find my students debate the issue with each other, instead of just listening to me lecture.

The digital version presents those same 5 primary sources, however, in this version, the students watch a video regarding then historical background. They then analyze which point of view they consider the most compelling.

This lesson plan is linked with NYS Social Studies standards, however, I'm sure you could add standards from your state.

Included in this resource:

  • 2 -page reading on Texas Independence (PDF, PowerPoint and Google Slides versions)
  • 5 primary sources - edited for clarity and comprehension with a 1 page graphic organizer and exit ticket (PDF, PowerPoint and Google Slides versions)
  • A digital version edited specifically for use with Google Classroom
  • 1-page answer key

NOTE: The classroom versions are fully editable in Google Slides. With the digital version, I've locked some of the text in the background so that the resource is more accessible for students.
