If you are a Texas K-2 teacher, this resource was designed especially for you! It provides a variety of materials for teaching Texas symbols, historical figures, landmarks, and geography.
My classes have always looked forward to our Texas unit. They love to make cowboys and sing “Deep in the Heart of Texas”. However, when it comes to content, I found it difficult to find enough age appropriate materials for my first and second graders. When I decided to create my own, I talked with K-2 teachers in five different Texas districts to see what resources they most needed to meet TEKS requirements. I hope you will find everything you need here to teach your class about Texas history!
Historical Figures – Stephen F. Austin, Jose’ Antonio Navarro, and Sam Houston
For each you will find:
- Simpler passage that is just half a page with a line art picture
at the top
- Full page reading passage of higher difficulty level with
illustration (in color and line art)
- Biography organizer
- Lined writing page with illustration of the person
Timelines – Three different template choices of varying difficulty
Texas Symbols –
- Color photo posters of 20 symbols plus the Texas pledge
- Two 20 page Texas symbols readers; an easier version for
Kinder and beginning first grade with just one sentence and a
picture and a more descriptive version for more advance first

you have the option to shorten the reader to whatever length
is most appropriate for you students.
- Write the Room with 12 pictures cards (in both color and line
art), recording sheet, and answer key

*All resources are in PDF format within a zipped folder. It is suggested that symbol and landmark posters be printed on card stock and laminated. It is not likely that you will be able to use every page of the 140 included as it was designed to meet the needs of K-2. However, you may find the different versions helpful if you have a need for differentiation within your class.
