**WHAT IS TEXT BASED EVIDENCE?**
It’s exactly what it says it is…evidence from a text that supports a student’s thinking or answer. The Common Core State Standards expect students to be able cite their thinking and answers based on evidence from a passage. No longer will students just be required to answer the ‘What?’, but it’s critical to know the ‘Why?’ behind their thinking.
A great way to ensure students are using text based evidence is through practicing Close Reading. Close Reading is simply having the students read the text with several goals:
To understand what the text is saying
To understand why the author wrote the text
To understand how the author manipulates the text
To understand the text structure and the reason the author chose that structure
To underline and circle key terms/phrases with a PURPOSE!
To allow the information to “stick” in their brains
To “talk-back” to the text and respond to their reading
These graphic organizers will be a great way to put your students to work on collecting text based evidence using any text!
