This packet includes six activities that will give young writers practice in writing an informational piece in response to text. Each topic has two pieces of text, and a writing prompt. Teachers can give their students specific instructions for what is expected in the finished product. For example, fifth grade students will be expected to write a longer, more detailed piece than third graders, and so on. A very simple rubric is included, many states have adopted specific rubrics for writing that teachers may want to use instead. The six topics covered in these activities are: animal adaptations, why we use money, spending time outdoors, being unique, cultures, and freedom. These topics are a perfect fit for the units of the third grade Reading Street text.
These activities were written for use as informational writing practice, but some of them could also be used as prompts for opinion writing.
