Throughout my teaching career I have witnessed many students with excellent decoding skills, who struggled in the area of reading comprehension. So what can we do to help those that can "read" but are not fully comprehending?
One of the strategies that I like to use is Text Connections. Specifically Text to Text, Text to Self, and Text to World Connections. This resource provides a poster providing a visual aid and guiding question for each of the 3 types of connections. In addition, you will find a writing frame for each (T-T, T-S, & T-W) that encourages students to put their thoughts into words.
To effectively use this strategy, begin by introducing the poster and modeling how to make connections. Then once students have become comfortable making connections on their own, use the writing frames to help them transfer their thinking onto paper. With practice, you will begin to see your students making connections on their own without your prompting.
I hope you find these posters and frames to be helpful in your classroom. If so, I'd love to hear your feedback!
