Product Description
Students “consume” a lot of information over the course of the year, but do they take the time to think about the information? Do we teach them how to think about the information they consume? This front/back page provides them with a format to think more in depth about the information they are consuming.

When I first designed this sheet, we had one sheet for every book we read as a class. Then my students started pointing out that we also read books in guided reading. They wanted a sheet for that too. Next someone asked about the articles we use for research, could we have a sheet for that? Then, finally a start student pointed out that the videos we watched for background knowledge gave us lots of information too, so why didn’t we have a sheet for that? I have now condensed all of the sheets into one “text consumption record”.

Simply print the sheet front/back and punch holes in them with a 3 hole punch. (I print a stack of copies and keep them in a bin that the students have easy access to.) Then introduce students to the format by completing one for each type of media as a class. Guide students through using complete sentences, what information should be in each box, etc. etc. Finally have students put their completed text consumption records into a binder or a folder with three prongs so that they can come back to the information they have consumed and revisit it.

As the year goes on, use a text consumption record with every book, article, poem or video that you work on whole group with your class. If time allows, use one for small group activities like guided reading too. Encourage students to use text consumption records during their independent reading time. Students could even use these sheets as a record of their homework reading.
