A text dependent analysis prompt for the poem “Father William”. The prompt is provided first so that students can analyze it before reading the poem. They should follow the three steps to figuring out a prompt.
The poem “Father William” ~ This poem is provided as a printable and as a Google Doc. You may want to first have students read the poem silently. You may then read it out loud to them or complete a choral read in which you assign half of the class to read the father’s part and the other half to read the son’s part. You could also allow students to read the poem this way with a partner.
Questions to accompany the poem ~ Some of these questions are comprehension questions, and some are questions that require more thought and analysis. The questions are provided as a printable and as a Google Form. Of course, an answer key is provided.
TDA Begin Brainstorming Sheet – Now that students have read the poem, they will begin their brainstorming process for the essay. A completed sample is provided.
Brainstorming Chart – This is one option that students can use to complete their brainstorming before writing an essay on the TDA prompt. A sample completed brainstorming chart for this TDA is included. This chart is included as a printable and as a Google Slide. Plus, this chart can be used for any TDA that students complete in future assignments!
Brainstorming Bubble Map- This is another option for students to use as brainstorming. A sample brainstorming map for this TDA is included. This bubble map is included as a printable and as a Google Slide. This bubble map can be used for any TDA that students complete in future assignments!
Writing an Introduction – This handout is included for you to use with students who struggle knowing how to start. This is a simple and effective method for middle schoolers to write an introduction. Remember, this book is intended for middle school students, not high school or college students. If you do not like this method for writing introductions, you can simply skip this page. :)
A sample essay ~ This sample essay can be used for you to show students what a good analysis for the TDA looks like. You may choose to read it before students write or after they have turned in their own paper.
