This PowerPoint presentation is the first in a series of four that focuses on close reading and the use of text-dependent questions. This presentation was used in a professional development workshop series for teachers in grades K-5 that lasted one hour. In this session, close reading is defined and described at the primary level. The session discusses "frontloading" and how close reading can push us to think about this concept with a more distributed mindset. Finally, the session dives into an overview of the four phases of close reading, and uses the poem, "Casey at the Bat" to practice all four phases. This session can be used along with my sessions, "Text-Dependent Questions What Does the Text Say," "Text-Dependent Questions How Does the Text Work," and "Text-Dependent Questions What Does the Text Mean"!
