This PowerPoint presentation is the second in a series of four that focuses on close reading and the use of text-dependent questions. This presentation was used in a professional development workshop series for teachers in grades K-5 that lasted one hour. In this session, we review close reading, why it is important and what the specific benefits are for kids. Then we zoom in on classroom discussion and take a closer look at different levels of questioning. Finally, we look at examples of questions about "What the Text Says", using the text, Trucks, by Donald Crews as a model. Teachers will spend time during this session working in grade level groups to create text-dependent questions for a selection of appropriate complex texts. Optional homework is also included to provide your teachers with even more experience writing their own text-dependent questions focusing on the text's main ideas and details. This session can be used along with my sessions, "Text-Dependent Questions Overview", "Text-Dependent Questions How Does the Text Work", and "Text-Dependent Questions What Does the Text Mean"!
