With the new emphasis on text-based questions, I find it very handy to have a set of question cards readily available for easy reference.
These are 32 of the text-based questions that I find most useful for close reading, guided reading and whole group discussions.
These open-ended questions are designed to be used with any informational text. (Because of the wide variation among informational texts, you will find some of these cards are better suited to certain texts.)
I often have students select a question to use as a writing prompt. Students also choose cards to bring home to discuss with a family member as they read in the evening. Parents often tell me that simply adding a few of these cards to a child's guided reading bag leads to much richer discussions at home.
I hope you find these useful. Please feel free to contact me at Annegardner4@gmail.com with any questions.
