PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This set of 36 task cards can be used with any story/passage you are reading. If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to ask your students meaningful, thought provoking questions about what they are reading, then this is for you!

The questions are designed to improve your students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Through this type of questioning, your students improve their reading ability by becoming active participants in their learning. The questions were designed to be used for all ages and ability levels, so differentiating your questioning, your instruction, and your expectations for individual students becomes a low prep activity.

The Task Cards are grouped as follows:

1. Working with and Integrating Text (WIT)
o identify main idea
o support main idea with details
o identify character traits
o make predictions
o identify themes
o understand story elements
o sequence events
o summarize
o visualization
o use context clues
o compare and contrast
o vocabulary development

2. Analyzing and Critiquing Text (ACT)
o understand author’s purpose

o fact vs. opinion
o making connections
o making generalizations
o critical thinking/higher order thinking

There are 20 Working With and Interpreting Text Task Cards (polka dot border) and 16 Analyzing and Critiquing Text (striped border). Simply print cards on to card stock, and laminate for durability. Cards can be used in many ways!

Also included is a Teacher Resource Card. Simply copy (back-to-back) on to card stock, laminate, and slip into whatever you are using for reading instruction (trade book, reading textbook, non-fiction text sources). The Questions List is most helpful when teaching trade books (when no Teacher’s Edition is available), and it takes the guesswork out of coming up with meaningful, higher order, critical thinking type comprehension questions.

In our class, we use Reader’s Workshop, and these Task Card questions become an invaluable resource, because they can be applied to any book your students are reading; and if you’re familiar with the Reader’s Workshop model, almost every student in your class can be reading a different book! They're as versatile as they are easy to incorporate into your reading instruction, no matter what program or method you are currently using! These Task Cards and Teacher Resource Card are PERFECT for all you novice teachers!
