This project designed to help students analyze narrative story elements, find supporting text evidence and synthesize the information into a graphic organizer. The project should be completed while the students are reading a novel and takes approximately four to six weeks to complete.
The packet includes a cover page for an illustration and two pages on main character, supporting characters, setting, problem and solution, main idea, theme, plot, point of view, figurative language and a blank title for other concepts you are teaching. I pick the concepts that I print based on my units of study, because using all of them for one project would be very time consuming. The page with lines is for the students to use while they are reading. I print them front and back so that when the students are done gathering information about each story element, they can take their text evidence and synthesize that information into a graphic organizer or poster to teach about each component.
This project can be completed in a whole group setting (everyone writing about the same book), literature circles or small groups (groups of students reading novels at their reading level) or as a home project (students reading a "Good Fit" book independently).
