Help your students have good text etiquette with this fun Text “Edit Kit!” If your kids are anything like mine, they are getting better at writing more sentences and even paragraphs. However, they are so easy to forget to use capitalization and correct punctuation! They also have errors with spelling, fingers spaces, and handwriting, but I am trying to keep it simple and start with just the two main areas that I feel are so important to work on when writing. I decided to create this packet to have my students practice reading through a “text” and editing for capitalization and punctuation only since those seem to be the most common errors that I see during writing. Starting simple!
The light bulb went off for this idea when I was texting someone one day and getting so frustrated at all of the mistakes I made (love and hate touch screen.) I realized that I am constantly editing my texts!! If I am always editing this way then maybe my students will understand and need some practice for their future, too!
Here is what is included:
~Common Core State Standards that align to this packet
~Anchor charts with “The Punctuation People!” The charts include
• Question Mark
• Exclamation Point
• Quotation Marks
• Finger Spaces
~ 10 original cell phone texts that have many capitalization and punctuation errors
~Answer sheet to edit texts
~ 2 additional activities: text a friend and write a bad text for a friend to edit
~Answer key for cell phone texts
I hope you and your students love this packet!
Happy Teaching, and Texting, Friends!!
