Do you want your students to go from superficial explanations of the evidence they find in texts to deeper more sophisticated interpretations of that evidence? More often than not teachers simply say, "show deeper thinking" - without actually giving students tangible, leverageable strategies that show students 'HOW' to show deeper thinking. Interpreting text evidence is VERY challenging for students.
This completely UNIQUE series of strategies will enable your middle school aged students to be able to think about their reading in a much more sophisticated way. This resource walks students step-by-step through the use of text analysis strategies that always leads to a deeper interpretation of text evidence. This video builds on the strategies presented in my Level 1 video on Quote Sandwiches and Warrants. I believe that you will find that the strategies covered in this video (and more previous one) will form the foundation of your work on getting students to think and write deeper about texts.
This video lesson can be shown directly to students. It is designed to be interactive, so a teacher would simply pause the video at different points and have the students do the work modeled on the video. There is enough content in this session to be spread over at least two, possibly even three class sessions. You can choose to play the video from start to finish or simply use portions of it for different aspects of your lesson on interpreting text evidence.
The lesson begins with a brief explanation of 'interpretation' with some interactive examples. Students then get to watch the reading aloud of a picture book. Students are then encouraged to discuss meaning. Model answers are provided and students are shown how to apply the 'evidence analysis techniques' to a short story (provided) and then eventually directly with their own independent reading books, book club books, or a class novel.
I guarantee you will use the strategies taught in this video again and again and again with your students, and you will want to come back for my video lessons at Level 3 (Interpretation through Association) and Level 4 - Supplementary Practice Resources.
ALL SLIDES shown in the video are offered as supplementary material FREE with this video. A link to the read aloud is also included and also certain graphic organizers.
Trust me on this purchase. The instructional knowledge that you are learning through this video is worth far more than the $6 dollars I am charging for this content. You'll also find that levels 1 and 3 will vastly extend your repertoire of teaching students how to think deeper about their reading. You might pay at least a hundred dollars to learn these techniques at a conference or through an all day P.D.
