Description

A week's worth of engaging lesson plans to teach students how to answer questions using text evidence. These lesson plans are designed to be low prep for the teacher, but keep your kids engaged and challenged the entire week!

There is a whole group and a small group lesson for each day so that you can differentiate and reach each learner.

All the materials are provided, besides books. All the lessons are engaging, low prep, and rigorous for your upper elementary students.

Why these lessons?

Engagement- I saw that my students needed more engagement and relation to their real-life in order to fully understand the skills, so I created these lessons to keep kids excited and involved the whole time.

Tiered Approach- We start with a real-life lesson, then practice as a whole group, work in a small group, work in partners, and finally work alone. We start with support on the skill and slowly take it away to really push the kiddos.

Rigor- The lessons keep kids thinking the entire time and push them to reach their potential.

Low-Prep- These lessons just need to be printed, copied, and they are ready to go! Most activities require little work beforehand for the teacher which makes a teachers busy life easier!

The lessons include:

Monday- Whole group introduction lesson called "Let's Learn About You". In this activity, students will complete a questionnaire with their families about their life. Then, they will learn how to answer questions using text evidence from their own life. They will do an anchor chart and learn sentence stems.

Tuesday- Do a KWL about dinosaurs. Read "Dinosaurs" by Gail Gibbons (found on EPIC) and do the discussion questions with text evidence. Look at misconceptions and see why you NEED text evidence. Create a dinosaur text evidence poster.

Wednesday- As a whole group you will read the book that is provided in this packet called "The Donut Dance". Then, you will answer text evidence questions together. Students will break off into groups and read a fiction book on their own (there is a EPIC collection provided. They will create an Instagram page that causes them to use text evidence from their story.

Thursday- Students will use photos to find proof to answer questions. Then, students will partner up and read the original story that is provided (there are five nonfiction stories) and answer the text evidence questions. Then, they meet with a group that had the same story and go over their similarities and differences with text evidence.

Friday- Students will get to make a Facebook profile. Then, they will write character traits on each other's "pages". They have to have proof to write the trait. Then, you will read "Hurricanes" by Gail Gibbons. As a class, you will work on questions using text evidence. Then, give the assessment.

There is one small group lesson per day. You can do this with every group or just do the lessons you think the groups need. You differentiate them by what books you choose.

Monday: Go over the anchor chart and then go over situations and decide if the students correctly used text evidence or not.

Tuesday: Read the nonfiction book about the T-Rex that is provided in the unit and do text evidence questions.

Wednesday: They will re-read the story from yesterday. This time they will be creating questions and answering them.

Thursday: The students will be given a character and problem and they will write a story while you help with writing strategies.

Friday: Students will take the stories that they wrote on Thursday and create questions. Then, they will read each other's stories and answer using text evidence.
