These passages can be used to practice text based evidence reading. The packet contains 1 story for each short vowel and 5 stories using mixed short vowels. Students practice reading fluency, blending and reading words, comprehension skills, and using the text to find answers. In each passage, there are three to four questions requiring students to look within the text and color the answer using a specific color. There are three versions of each story. The first version requires students to answer the questions by writing phrases on handwriting lines. The second version has the same questions, but has multiple choice answers. The third version requires students to use regular lines to write their answer in a complete sentence.
I use these stories in my Kindergarten classroom. I use the multiple choice version at the beginning of the year, while students are still learning how to read and use the text to find answers. The versions that require writing are used later in the year when students can write independently. I also usually run off a handwriting sheet on the back for students to write three to four sentences about what they have read. This can be used in small group or a whole group setting.
