My students LOVED using this notebook for nonfiction text features!
This is a great scaffolded instructional tool and assessment rolled into one. We mainly used this resource with Scholastic News, and the entire unit lasts about 2 weeks.
The text features included are:
Table of Contents
Labels & Diagrams
During the first week, we focus on a few specific features each day and journal about them. After reading a Scholastic News, we discuss individual text features and I guide them towards which to cut out and paste onto the first pages. Each feature is introduced during the first week, and I make sure we have cut and paste an example of each feature on the first pages.
During the second week, we read a Scholastic News daily, and students are then encouraged to cut and paste features they find on their own on the second headed page. Students are also encouraged to write or draw any features they find while reading informational books during independent reading time. These second pages are used for assessment.
After grading, I kept the student books inside my Sub Tub--
Scholastic News and this Notebook are great substitute activities!
Additional note--We do not use every single Scholastic News every month. I often have an issue left over each month, or a couple extra from student absences. I save these and accumulate enough to use while teaching this unit. Informational books also work very well with this product; students just need to copy the writing or drawing of the features they find.
