Transform your classroom into an operating room! Divide students into operating teams and give them the materials necessary to perform surgery on a patient (non-fiction texts, scissors, glue). Each team of doctors will have to look though the texts and find one of two text features for the 10 places the patient needs operated. Teams of doctors will need to decide which text feature will be the best to use, remove it from the text and paste it onto the patient (they could also stick it on with a Band-Aid). Give each student latex gloves, a face mask and hair net to look the part. Have plastic tweezers for the pasting of the text feature, heartbeat or ambulance music in the background, white table cloths covering the desks or tables, clip boards to writing patient notes and patient files containing the informational texts.
After students choose their text feature and paste it on the patient, they must answer what the purpose of the text feature is AND what they learned from the text feature in their patient file.
Included in the Packet:
-A patient to operate on.
-Patient files recording sheet.
-Printable non-fiction text.
