Display a variety of nonfiction books and use these task cards to set up a nonfiction text features hunt! Task cards are a great way to get your students up and out of their seats and to have fun while learning. Help your students be able to identify and understand various text features as a scoot activity, partner work or in a small group. Then, have your students share out what they found or learned with the class.
You may post the cards throughout the room or set them up as a rotation activity where students move from one station to the next. Brain research supports the link of movement within the classroom to increased academic performance! These cards are a great fit for use during Kagan structures.
Use this activity again and again, using different books, for added practice!
This item contains 24 colorful task cards (each with a different text feature to search for), alphabet cards to set up at each station to mark the rotation, "share out" assignment cards for student accountability and speaking opportunities and several options for a recording sheet.
**Download the preview to see a sampling of the cards and to determine the level of difficulty for your students.
Because not all nonfiction books contain all text features included in this set, directions to modify the activity are included as are several different recording sheets for a shorter or longer activity. This can be used with as few as 12 of the cards. Follow-up speaking and sharing activities are optional.
Text features to hunt for are:
words in color
table of contents
bullets and asterisks
Directions for use and ways to modify this activity for a smaller class size, fewer features to hunt for and differentiation are included. A cover card for your set is provided.
