This activity allows students to complete a "scavenger hunt" of a nonfiction/ informational text but has an accountability piece for a teacher to assess their abilities.
The activity asks the students to go into a non-fiction text and locate the title of the chapter, a page number and write 1 key fact from that chapter using the table of contents. Additionally, the students are required to do the same activity using the index.
This activity allows students choice about which sections of the book they want to visit and allows for easy differentiation.
At the end of the activity page there is an exit ticket that requires students to complete a variety of short answer questions to assess their understanding of table of contents and indexes.
This activity aligns with CCSS RI.5 and can be used across multiple grade levels
