I’m a second grade teacher in Oregon. I’ve been teaching since 2004. I’ve taught in first, kinder, and fourth, but this is my 7th year in second grade. I live with my wonderful husband and 2 little kids in Happy Valley, Oregon.

Common Core Standard:
Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
This year with the common core standards, we have shifted to more specific and focused lessons on these new standards…and more specific tests. I looked into and experimented with a few I’d found on Pinterest, TPT, and from other teachers. In my own class observations, I could see that most of the kids WERE getting it…but the tests weren’t showing it. But I am not the type to accept my own observation that the kids have gotten it…I need proof! So I created my own test. It has big pictures to go along with easy to understand descriptions of each text feature. This is the best test I’ve seen out there so far and it really showed what the students knew.
