This activity requires students to read to learn. Students must reflect on their prior knowledge and conceptions, as well as use the text as a resource to support or refute their conceptions. Additionally, students must reflect on how text features help them to more deeply comprehend the text. I have used this activity as part of a unit on Author's Purpose. Our focus in this unit was to examine authors use different strategies to accomplish their purpose. This activity helped us to see how the author uses text features to accomplish their purpose of informing us. See my other resources in the Author's Purpose unit to find out more about the strategies we studied when the author's purpose was to persuade, explain and entertain.
