Text Structure - Text Structure Concept Posters
Text Structure Concept Posters - Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, Description, Problem and Solution, and Sequence all included.
Students can use these posters to demonstrate their understanding of the different text structures:
• cause and effect
• compare and contrast
• problem and solution
There is one overall text structure poster, and two posters for studying each text structure (one for the structure in general, and one for use with a text that has that structure). There is also a text structure poster that has students determining which structure was used and creating their own graphic organizer, as well as two blank ones (one in each style) that you can add your own questions to (the blank one is not an editable file, so you will have to hand write your own questions in). The posters can be used as an assessment for learning (as a diagnostic activity to see what knowledge your students are bringing to a concept), assessment as learning (as a formative assessment during a unit or as a review before the end of a unit), or as assessment of learning (as a summative task at the end of a unit).
Teachers could have all students complete the same poster, or have students create different posters to create a concept wall full of visually appealing posters. Teachers can use the general text structure posters to teach or model during an introductory lesson about the specific text structure. The second poster for each can be used for independent student work (and assessed using the rubric provided).
These posters make a GREAT sub day activity, needling little to no prep for you or the sub. They would also make a great addition to your writing or reading journals or notebooks.
Posters are in black and white and are easy to reproduce. Students are expected to add visual appeal to the posters by adding color and creativity. Posters are created in 8.5 x 11 size, but can be enlarged on the photocopier to print at 11 x 17 size.
A rubric is also included for summative or formative assessment. I have also made a student self-reflection checklist for students to use prior to handing in their posters.
Completed posters will make a fabulous bulletin board display
that both students and teachers will be proud of!
