Text Structure Graphic Organizers with Paired Mentor Texts

We all hope that students come into our middle and high school ELA classrooms with the ability to identify text structure. However, this is not always the reality! Even if students do come into class with some knowledge of text structure, they lack the ability to make connections between elementary level cause and effect understanding and the high expectations demanded by Common Core writing. This print and go resource bridges the gap so that students can apply text structure knowledge to higher-level texts and ultimately to their own writing.

How You Can Use the Organizers:

★ Use the included nonfiction articles as mentor texts to demonstrate each of the five text structures. After Close Reading the articles, students can use the appropriate graphic organizer to break down the text. Teaching 1 structure a day yields 5 days worth of easy no-prep lessons!

★ You can select any nonfiction text that focuses on one of the five text structures and have students use the graphic organizer to analyze the text after Closely Reading the article. This is also an easy low-prep activity to leave if/when you need substitute work.

★ Have students complete the graphic organizer as an outline before writing an Informative, Narrative, or Argumentative essay in one of the text structures. This activity is especially valuable to have them do for their own writing after becoming familiar with the organizers and applying them to mentor texts.
