This activity is to be used AFTER internal text structures are taught. Included in this product is the graphic organizer, but not any of the picture books.
This assignment can be used as review centers, whole class review, or as an individual assignment. I have used this in my classroom as review centers (small groups of 3-4 students). Once students are in their center, they will read the picture book together (they may do this more than once). On the graphic organizer, students will list the events of the story, list any key words that were used, and then critique whether or not the author did a good job of using that internal text structure. The teacher can use tell students beforehand what internal text structure each book includes, but to make it more challenging have the students figure it out.
Again, picture books are not included, but here are some ideas that I have used:
Compare/Contrast: "Who Would Win" by Jerry Pollotta
Problem/Solution: "Dog Breath" by Dave Pilkey
Cause/effect: "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff
Description: "The Very Cranky Bear" by Nick Bland
