Use these products to help student gain familiarity with nonfiction text structures.
The word sort is to help students find/ look out for key words and phrases in specific types of text structure. For example, when they see time order words, they know it is probably a sequence type text. When using the sort, you can use the heading cards or attach the Target adhesive labels to act as a pocket on a poster size version on the sheet (you can print this out on adobe). There is also the option to just write out the words or phrases in the boxes on the worksheet. There are some blank cards to write your own words in the sort if needed. Some words can go into both sections as well. I always ask the student to justify why each word belongs in each section.
Text List Sheet
Students can either use one of these sheets to track their nonfiction reading or you can print one out, poster size, and track the classes nonfiction reading. Just write the title of each type of text in the box. Or you can give students different types of articles of short nonfiction texts and have them classify the text types.
