In a newsletter format, articles about Alcatraz, prison conditions, and famous prison breaks are presented in different nonfiction text structures. Students read the newsletter and then complete a chart that identifies the text structure, signal words, and author's purpose. There is also an option to select one of the articles to complete a graphic organizer, and a quiz is included as well.
This activity covers the following text structures: chronological or sequential, main idea, compare and contrast, cause and effect, or problem and solution.
