Product Description
Do you need some engaging and low prep reading centers for identifying text structures?

This reading center resource includes ten spinner centers for practicing how to determine the text structure of a text, as well as answering other related questions.

Click here to see the BUNDLE of Reading Spinner Centers for 4th and 5th Grade.

The students will read the text and determine the text structure of the text. Then they will spin the spinner to answer questions related to the text structure. To “play” the center, the students will use a pencil and a paper clip to spin the spinner. When they spin a question the first time, they will answer the question. If/when they spin that question again, they will prove their answers with evidence from the text.

There are two levels included in this file. Level 1 is less advanced, while level 2 is more advanced. The texts are the same between the two levels, but the questions are different. Here are some ideas for using the two levels:
1. Assign different levels to different groups of students as needed.
2. Assign half of the level 1 spinners to the entire class in the beginning of your study, and then assign the other half of the spinners in level 2 as the students progress with the skill.

Level 1 Questions:
Identify the text structure of the text.
Identify the signal words that help determine the text structure of the text.
Prove the text structure with evidence other than signal words.
Sketch a graphic organizer that could be used to organize information from the text.
In 1-2 sentences, define the text structure used.
Make a list of three other topics that would work well with the same text structure as the text.

Level 2 Questions:
Identify the text structure of a text.
Prove that the text structure chosen is correct.
Complete a text structure organizer with the key details from the text.
Write a new paragraph with the same overall topic but a different text structure.
Write a new paragraph on a different topic with the same text structure.
Make a list of three other topics that would work well with the same text structure as the text.

Answer keys for the centers are included for level 1 only (due to the nature of the questions for level 2). Recording sheets are included for both levels. I have also included an optional “Show What You Know” exit slip if you wish to further assess your students.

The topics included are:
Digital overload
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
Ornament on a holiday tree
French fries
Waking up late
Global warming
Eating healthy
Having a pet
Louisiana
Growing avocados
