This tool will allow you to have students go beyond basic compare and contrast writing. Students must compare and contrast a text to a film, and then go beyond to evaluate why the director/producer/screen writer/actors, etc. made the choices they did. They also will be asked to evaluate which is the better of the two – using support including text quotations and paraphrases from the film.
This activity directly correlates with ELA Common Core 8.RL.7. Students will assess themselves with the I Can statements many schools have used to make Common Core more understandable and attainable for students.
Download includes lesson plan/student hand out, graphic organizer, and rubric. It is generic – if you are not an 8th grade teacher, you can substitute or omit the line in the objective related to Grade 8.
Kid tested – it works! I am currently using it with The Hunger Games.
