Are you teaching Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" whilst looking to improve your students' written fluency? Your students may have fun with this one! This activity has students linking scenes "Romeo and Juliet" utilizing their already present skills in text messaging. Afterwards, they are to provide a summary explaining (a) why the conversation happened, and (b) how it links the scenes.
I had a large measure of success with this assignment. Students were more than happy to "text" in class, and were able to provide explanations without trouble. It encouraged writing and creativity, and led to more substantive written assessments. That, and having other students read the conversations in class led to a bit of amusement.
The document included is a Word document, and has a spot or two for you to insert your name. Feel free to change the rubric at the bottom. I promise your students will find this assignment refreshing...
