When my nieces and nephews were small, I made up stories about Thagalump - both a type of creature, and this particular creature's name. I recently thought to myself, why not turn some of those stories into learning activities?
In this story, Thagalump is insecure about his odd looks and is afraid to ask a friend to be his Valentine. Luckily, his friend is very positive and accepting...a true friend!
This short story is presented as a texting conversation between Thagalump and another person. At the bottom of the page, after the conversation ends, students are instructed to 1) find some rhyming words, 2) find the words that describe Thagalump's looks, and 3) turn over their papers and draw what they imagine Thagalump looks like.
This is a quick, fun, creative activity that teaches acceptance, friendship, and rhyming.
