This is a PowerPoint presentation that I use with the short story "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes.
The students use inferencing skills to analyze Hughes's characterization of the two characters based on their dialogue and actions. The concept of literary theme is reviewed, and students are asked to summarize the story.
There are 14 questions. I generally print this out as a handout with 3 slides and have the students answer the questions with a partner. This would also work well as a think-pair-share activity. A teacher's guide with suggested answers is included.
This lesson speaks to the CCSS RL 6-8.1-6-8.3. The presentation is fully editable so that you can make it suit your particular needs.
