The product uses the short story "Thank You M'am" by Langston Hughes to review several important skills/concepts:
- vocabulary development
- the elements of plot
- developing text-dependent questions
- making inferences
The product is a powerpoint lesson that can be implemented in 2-3 days.. Suggested breakdown:
Day 1: Complete the journal/whole group question and vocabulary development activity; read and summarize the story;
Day 2: Review the elements of plot and how to develop text-dependent questions;
Day 3: Complete the extension activity that compares Mrs. Jones to the woman in Hughes' poem "Mother to Son."
The product includes a link to the main text and extension activity text.
The product can be used as a substitue lesson plan, especially if youv'e covered the elements of plot with your students. It's meaningful work and it will keep students engaged for the entire RELA perioid/block (you can assign as much or as little as you like).
Enjoy and let me know what you think!
