Product Description
Thank you, Mr. Falker, by Patricia Polacco, is a perfect Back-To-School
read aloud for students in grades 1-5.

The “believe in yourself” theme sets the tone for student work habits and behavioral expectations in the classroom throughout the school year. The story provides many opportunities to celebrate diversity, examines the effects of teasing and bullying, and demonstrates how the important people in our lives help shape our personalities.

Interactive PowerPoint presentations and Skillwork activities were created to be used before, during, and after reading. Answer Keys are provided.

Included are:

1. Making Predictions: Students take a picture walk through the story, as a pre-reading activity, making predictions to identify story elements and book themes.

2. Vocabulary Development: Challenging and/or unfamiliar words are presented in a PowerPoint presentation, where students can practice their decoding skills while learning new vocabulary through words, illustrations, and excerpts from the text.

3. Character Traits: Students identify character traits, and cite evidence from the text to support their responses.

4. Cause and Effect: Students match cause and effect (2 worksheets) and find examples of cause and effect in text (1 worksheet).

5. Literary Devices: Students work with literary devices found in book, including simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, and personification. Literary devices are presented in an interactive PowerPoint where these devices are defined and students can practice identifying literary devices found in text.

6. Writing a friendly letter: Students write a friendly letter thanking an influential person in their life (Sample letter provided). Writing paper included.

7. Comprehension Skills: End-of-Book Quiz (true/false)

Ease into the new school year with these timesaving activities, while jumpstarting your Language Arts and Character Education programs.
