Description
This activity is aligned to:
RF.K.2c: Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
RF.K.2d: Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds phonemes) in three-phoneme consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words
RF.K.3a: Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant.
This I-Spy activity blends two of my most favorite activities: write the room AND I-Spy. Instead of merely reading words and recording rooms they find while writing the room, in this activity students will use magnifying glasses to inspect turkeys for hidden pictures. Once found, they will then sound out the word and write it on their recording sheet. This unit is tiered to meet the various readiness levels of your students. It has two tiers, one focuses on CVC words and the other on CCVC/CVCC words. Within each tier there are several different levels of activities that your students can complete depending on their readiness. For students still mastering beginning letter sounds, there is a tier for that. For students attempting to isolate beginning and ending sounds there is a tier for that and then there is a tier for students who are ready to isolate each sound in the word in order to write it correctly. This activity is ideal for differentiating instruction to meet the various learning profiles of your students as well. It appeals to kinesthetic learners who need to move, logical learners that like a great puzzle, and if you decide to place these cards in a sensory table full of shucked corn, beans or acorns, it will also appeal to your naturalist learners. If you prefer, however, you can merely cut the turkeys out along the lines and place the cards in a festive bucket and have students pull the cards out and inspect them, recording their answers as they pull each card. This way will appeal to your students who display intrapersonal intelligence. And finally, you can also post the cards around the room and have students use a clipboard to write the room and search for the turkeys.
This set includes:
12 CVC cards
3 Color response sheets for CVC words
3 Black and white response sheets for CVC words
12 CVCC/CCVC cards
4 Color response sheets for CVCC/CCVC words
4 Black and white response sheets for CVCC/CCVC words
Teachers: Laminate, cut apart and post cards around your room for students to find. Provide the corresponding colored tiered response sheets (laminated) or the black and white response sheets for your students to record their work.
