This is a perfect quick and creative writing activity to use for Thanksgiving time. First, I share the thankful vocabulary poster with the students and ask them what it means to be thankful. I have them fill out a quick list of things they are thankful for---I usually set a timer for 5 minutes. Then as a class we brainstorm and discuss what kinds of things are important to them and things they are thankful for.
Then I share the Thankful Poem example(s) with them. I’ve included four different examples depending how you want to print out their final pieces. The photographs print very nicely in black and white. However, if you want them printed in color, it might be more cost effective to have them printed at Walmart, Staples, or Office Depot. The students love seeing that I am thankful for them! For the last item on our list, I stress that it is people and relationships (not objects) that are the most sacred possessions of all! Most students choose their family as the last item, which warms my heart.
I’ve included three different templates depending on the age/grade of your students, for their first drafts. One has some guidelines for them to follow. The other ones are wide open for their ideas. After the students write their first drafts, I conference with them individually. I encourage them to add descriptive details to make their writing come alive!
Then we either hand-write their final drafts or we type up them up at the computer lab. After I have checked them over one last time, I print them out on special colored or holiday themed paper. I’ve included a few different papers for you to use in this product. I always print out two copies. The first copy is for our classroom book. Then I have them create an illustration to go with their writing and bind it together as a book and add to our class library for everyone to read! I have the second copy laminated to give to their family at Thanksgiving! The parents absolutely love them!
