Every year before the Thanksgiving break, I read the book Balloons Over Broadway, by Tony Sarg, to my students. It is the true story of a puppeteer that invented the balloons used in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Then they engage in this activity where they write a persuasive letter to Macy's for what balloon they think should be in next years Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Then they get to draw and design their balloon.
My kids LOVE this activity and it can be done at a variety of grade levels. I included some example letters to support students in understanding how to be persuasive.
All you need is the book Balloons Over Broadway and you are set! (You could do it without the books, but the kids love learning the history behind the parade first)
