Being Teacher

My kids love this! Have you ever heard of mumming at Thanksgiving? Mumming was an early 20th century custom on Thanksgiving in which children dressed in crazy costumes playing pranks soliciting money. Read how the practice of mumming led to our pervasive Thanksgiving classroom decorations and lesson plans. This primary source small group ELA lesson incorporates 5 Common Core ELA standards and social studies standards. It can be used for whole group or small group instruction. Includes 5 day lessons with higher order thinking questions, reading strategies, text based questions, writing prompts, decoding words vocabulary, and extensions for centers. The primary source used in this lesson is from the New York Times letter to the editor published in 1911 that implores parents and citizens to refrain from giving to Thanksgiving “mummers”.
