Students write and publish their own documented digital stories of how their family share and spend Thanksgiving Day using Microsoft Office Word, the Internet and a scanner.
Skills acquired and or further developed are those of creative, critical and higher order thinking; creative writing, and Microsoft Word software application processing skills (open , save, edit and print a file, insert graphics and photos, and using the internet to gather information and email an attached file).
I have used this lesson to coach and/or teach 3rd thru 6th grade students several times. The students always enjoy recalling, sharing, writing and publishing their family Thanksgiving traditional activities and the parents love being secondary recipients of the bound hard copy and digital file copy of their child’s publication.
Included in this teaching and learning package are 1) the lesson plan complete with the aligned Common Core Standards for English Language Arts > Writing > 5th grade strand, 2) the rubric assessment information, 3) the student directions and 4) the Family Thanksgiving Day Dinner Story Making Lesson Questions to stimulate the students’ thoughts.
