FUN Thanksgiving dice activities to practice number recognition, counting, and simple addition!!!

Three activities with two different versions of each:

1. Roll and Color:

  • Version one (use one die to roll numbers 1-6).
  • Version two (use two dice to roll numbers 2-12). I would suggest having students only color in one area at a time for each roll.

2. Roll and Record:

  • Version one (use one die to roll numbers 1-6): Roll the die and record the number rolled in the correct column. Game is over when one column is filled in.
  • Version two (use two dice to roll numbers 7-12): Have students record the numbers OR the addition sentence in the correct column.

3. Roll a Turkey: Roll the dice and use the key to draw different parts of the turkey. Students can play with a partner and race to draw the turkey or they can play independently to complete the whole turkey.

  • Version one (use one die to roll numbers 1-6).
  • Version two (use two dice to roll numbers 7-12).

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 5.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
