Literacy Centers


Come Together – a differentiated sound & CVC activity
RF.K.2a, RF.K.2c

Version 1: Students match the picture to the CVC word. After matching the pieces, students find the picture on the paper and write the word.

Version 2: Students match the beginning sound and half of the picture with the ending rime and the second half of the picture. After matching the pieces, students find the picture on the paper and write the word.


Harvest Rhymes – a differentiated rhyme activity
RF.K.2a

Version 1: Students choose a pumpkin card with three pictures on it. They must identify the pictures and determine which two rhyme. Then they use the number on the card to find the matching pictures on the recording sheet. They color the two pictures from the set that rhyme.

Version 2: Students choose a pumpkin card with one picture on it. They must identify the picture. Then they use the number on the card and find it on the recording sheet. There are two pictures next to the number. They must color the one that rhymes with the picture on the card.



Native Words – differentiated sight word puzzles
RF.K.3c

Version 1: Students choose a puzzle top and read the word. They match the puzzle top that says the sight word with the puzzle pieces with the letters on the bottom. When they have matched the pieces they read the word again and use a white crayon to write it inside a feather on the recording sheet. After they have written in white crayon, they can color the feather in with a marker to reveal the word.

Version 2: Students choose a puzzle top and read the sentence. They figure out the missing word using the picture to help guide them. They match the puzzle top to the puzzle pieces for the letters of the missing word. When they have matched the pieces they read the sentence again and use a white crayon to write the missing word inside a feather on the recording sheet. After they have written in white crayon, they can color the feather in with a marker to reveal the word.



Pilgrim Hats – a differentiated letter and sound activity.
RF.K.1d, RF.K.2d

Version 1: Students choose a pilgrim hat card and name the lowercase letter. Then students use the recording sheet to find the matching uppercase letter in a pilgrim hat and color it.

Version 2: Students choose a pilgrim hat card and name the picture. They say the beginning sound of the picture. Then students use the recording sheet to find the letter in a pilgrim hat that matches the beginning sound and colors it.



Tail Feathers – a differentiated syllable activity
RF.K.2b

Version 1: Students choose a turkey body, say the picture, and clap the syllables. They give the turkey the number of feathers as there are syllables in the picture. Once the students know how many syllables there are, they use the recording sheet to find the matching picture. They color the number of feathers as there are syllables.

Version 2: Students sort the turkey feathers by how many syllables the picture on the feather has. They add the feather to the correct turkey (labeled 1 syllable, 2 syllables, or 3 syllables). One the recording sheet, the students find the picture and write the numeral for how many syllables there are underneath.
