In this fun activity, students will plan their own extravagant Thanksgiving feast! Students will decide who they are inviting for their big dinner and will compose a shopping list of items. (Teachers can determine, based on student level, how many items should be included on the list). Then comes the fun part, students can either estimate the cost of their items or look up the cost online (my students found great success with Google shopping). At the end, students must use multiplication and addition to come up with a total price for their Thanksgiving dinner.
This is a great way to practice addition, because students will be adding together various decimal numbers. However, it also practices multiplication because students may need multiple of the same item. My students loved this and actually asked to bring it home for homework!
