PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a fun Common Core/ TNReady aligned opinion writing prompt for you to use with grades 3, 4, or 5. Students will be motivated to give their opinion about what their family will eat on Thanksgiving. If you really want to get them excited, serve up some Oreo cookies during your writing workshop. (The graphic organizer spells out ORE-RE-REO, like a triple stuffed Oreo cookie!)

I wrote two separate texts and included loads of resources to help students write an opinion essay about whether they want to eat fish or turkey on Thanksgiving. (I wrote the texts to allow plenty of reasons and evidence for either side to be defended.)

Included:
1. Text 1: I wrote this text to help students understand that while turkey may have been consumed by the pilgrims on the first Thanksgiving, it is very likely that they ate fish.
2. Text 2: This article discusses the health benefits of eating lean meats including turkey, chicken, and fish.
3. Prompt and Tips: This is the writing prompt and a list of "tips" that students should follow to write their best essays. The tips will help them meet the expectations on the rubric that you will use to grade their essays.
4. Graphic Organizer: Shaped like an Oreo Cookie to help students visualize the components of an opinion essay
5. Exemplar: Use my example to show students what you expect.
6. Stationery: Lined paper with a black and white place setting that kids can color.
7. Rubric: Grade students' writing using this Common Core aligned rubric.
8. Standards: All of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Common Core/ Tennessee TN Ready state standards are listed for you.
