Students record and interpret Thanksgiving data with the fun & engaging math activities in this packet Included in this packet are three different bar graphs with a Thanksgiving theme. A brief description of a supposed classroom scenario is given in which each graph was created, and then students answer a variety of questions. Some basic questions (How many people ate Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant? How many more people voted for the black and white turkey compared to the orange turkey?) & some questions that require more mathematical thinking (Compare the number of votes in each column and name an example of a column that has ½ as many votes as another column) are included.
Following the three graph activities there is an optional page that suggests that your students create their own Thanksgiving graph with some guiding questions. I included this page because the CCSS math standards require that 2nd graders construct graphs (NOT just fill in or complete them!) - a skill that, in my opinion, requires lots of guided practice before second graders will be able to do this independently!
Each of the three graphs has a different set of questions and a more challenging "stretch your thinking" question at the end, giving your students plenty of different opportunities to become familiar with reading and interpreting graphs. The activities may work best as guided practice with the teacher as opposed to independent work in a math center depending on the grade level and math ability of your students.
Please take a look at the preview to see what kind of problems are included in this packet. Thank you, again, for your interest!
