This game can be used at a literacy center or as a formative assessment in small group instruction. It can also be used by a teacher, support staff or volunteers to reinforce skills. Every day in my small groups, we take a “test” using one of the card games. I can quickly determine which words/skills my students are struggling with and adjust my teaching accordingly (formative assessment!!). Taking a test at the end of the small group session is also a fantastic way to motivate students to finish all of their work!
You can use these cards in two ways, depending upon your students’ abilities. If you are focusing on reading, show the word card to the student and have them read the word. If your focus is on spelling, tell the student the word without showing it to them and have them write or spell the word. If they get it correct, they keep the card. For this homophone game, I require the students to give a definition of the word or use the word in a sentence.
A title card is included to help with identification and organization. There are several spinners included in this packet. In my classroom, we use a spinner at the end of every game to determine the winner. This way, the person with the most cards is NOT always the winner! It also adds an element of math into the lesson – counting and comparing numbers!. To use the spinner, just print on cardstock &/or laminate. Use a brad and cut out the arrow (or use a paper clip) to make the “spinner”.
