An I AM poem with a THANKSGIVING twist! Open-ended extended prompts for Canadian/U.S. Thanksgiving or autumn to jump start students' thinking have been added to the line starters. For example,
I smell __ a fragrance related to the holiday or this time of year
I like___ something you look forward to doing during this time
Prompts related to gratitude have also been added to the traditional format: I am thankful...; I am grateful...; and I appreciate....
--instruction sheet with the extended prompts (18 lines)
--detailed teacher suggestions for use
--visually appealing format appropriate for 4-8 and Canada or the U.S.; simple black and white for easy photocopying.
--a half dozen sheets with the beginning lines but not the extended prompts to use for drafts or final copies, decorated with Thanksgiving and fall themes.
A final decorated copy can be a terrific bulletin board. Use as a menu choice for creative writing, as a quick write, as the follow-up for an adjective lesson, for a center, or as as a fun activity to write and/or share the day before Thanksgiving break. A suggestion is to ask for volunteers to pick a response to one prompt and others can raise their hand if they share that feeling.
Grades 4-8. Supports CCS Standard ELA-Literacy.W.3d Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to convey experiences and events.
